Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that Philippines Army would not buy US F-16 Falcon fighters although he had received suggesting letter from US cabinet.
According to President Duterte, the US forwarded him a letter requesting the purchase of F-16 fighters signed by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, and Secretary of Defense James Mattis. According to Duterte, the letter read:
“The United States is eager to cooperate with the Philippine nation in the procurement of defense weapons and this cooperation is mutually beneficial, and we suggest that the Philippines consider the possibility of buying machines. Lockheed Martin F-16 Falcon fighter “
The F-16 Flacon is a Lockheed Martin 4+ fighter jet and one of the most versatile fighters in the nation. However, President Duterte immediately rejected the proposal and said that the military did not need the F-16 because the Philippines did not intend to fight any country. At the same time, he stressed that the Philippines only needs combat helicopters and a small number of planes in order to fight insurgents.
Duterte also mentioned that the Philippines previously ordered its used M16 assault rifles to equip the Philippine military, but the plan was opposed by US lawmakers. The Philippine government has violated human rights when conducting drug war in the country, causing many deaths.
Asked if President Duterte planned to visit the United States in the future and purchase the F-16 Falcon, Duterte immediately refused:
“In the immediate future, I do not intend to come to the US and maybe I do not have time to do it. The purchase of the F-16? There will be no doubt that they will be in the right place because even the simplest M16 rifles can not deliver us. “
He did not forget the fact that six of the helicopters Washington had sold to the Philippines had three crashed to kill some pilots.
This is a difficult question to answer when you say “we are friends”. We are friends but remember, you made us a colony.
Mr Duterte also criticed about the United States criticisms when Philippines intended to buy 6 Russian Kilo class submarines and Mr Duterte express his collaborations with Russia president Putin in many times
Currently, in addition to Russia, three other countries join the war to supply Philippines submarines, including Korea, France and Indonesia.
